mini-update [May. 14th, 2007|10:18 pm]
I passed the New York State Teacher's Exam with flying colors. I have an apartment in NYC on the corner of 143rd and Broadway, my lease starts June 15th. I will be done with college in 3.5 weeks. NYC Teaching Fellow training begins June 18. Everything's happening so fast. I love and hate this school all at the same time. My friends are awesome.

I'm going to either revitalize my blog when I start my new job (bilingual elementary school teacher in the Bronx) or I will start a new one. Haven't decided which yet...

more drama with my stupid car [Jan. 20th, 2007|09:19 pm]
[Current Mood |annoyedannoyed]

so, the driver's side door on my 1985 toyota camery decided to permanently lock and jam itself shut today and it will not reopen. even when angie was turning the key from the outside of the car while i tried pulling it up from the inside, it would not budge. i know it's not iced shut because in the moment it jammed i was getting in the car (driver's side) and had just closed the door when i realized it wasn't closed all the way (it was like almost closed but just hadn't "hooked" itself to the shut position yet) and so i pulled it from the inside and i heard this god awful crunch sound that sounded kind of like pieces of the inside of the door dislocating and falling apart. then i tried to immediately reopen it but it would not open and the lock would not pop up, all while i was still stuck inside. so i am now crawling in and out of the passenger's side to use car, and unless one of you has experienced such a situation before and/or has some genious advice on how to fix a jammed lock, i will have to take it to the toyota dealer this week. i wonder how much it costs to replace a car door anyway? dammit.

and also, since the seat belt system is annoyingly linked to the doors, i will have to just drive without a seat belt until it gets fixed.

i can't wait until i can live in a city with a public transportation system good enough that i don't need a car.

I'm in the library "working on my SIP" right now [Nov. 15th, 2006|11:06 pm]
I didn't get in to TFA. I found out on election day. I was surprised. Then confused. Still confused, but less upset. Gypsy (ex-border studies director who wrote one of my recommendations) said she wanted me to get her a phone number and a name of a person to talk to, and said she was going to bat for me because it was ridiculous. While it was tempting, I have decided that I don't want to work for an organization that doesn't see my talent anyway.

I also failed COMPS. I went in and talked to Profesora Valle about it today and told her how I thought it was frustrating how I could get A's in all of the Spanish classes I've taken over the past four years and then fail COMPs, along with 70% of the senior Spanish majors. Her response was that she didn't see my point, "since this happens every year." I'm re-taking the son-of-a-bitch test on Friday.

Ok, so now for the actual exciting news. I'm participating in an emergency response delegation to Oaxaca, Mexico with Witness for Peace during the first week of December. Go here: http://www.witnessforpeace.org/ Click on the first link, it explains the delegation I will be attending. I'm really looking forward to this. And what I really need right now is something to look forward to. Since my winter break starts with Thanksgiving break, my December schedule will look like this:

Nov 22- Fly from Kalamazoo to DC for Thanksgiving (I have a late night flight with a layover in Chicago, the busiest aiport of the country, on the busiest travel day of the year. Should be awesome.)

Dec 1- Leave DC and fly to Oaxaca

Dec 1 to Dec 8 - In Oaxaca w/ WFP delegation

Dec 8- arrive in Mexico City

Dec 8 - 20 - Chill in Mexico City, Tenancingo, Toluca and (and possibly a spontaneous trip to Acapulco!!!) with Dorothy, Claudia y los de mas. CAN'T WAIT. (Camo, Dwayne and Sarah will also be in Mexico City from Dec. 15-20!)

Dec 20 - Fly to back to DC

Jan 2 - Back to Kalamazoo, start classes again the next day.

So now I should probably get back to working on my SIP, so I don't flunk out of school altogether.

Oh wait, one more thing:
From the front page of CNN.com: "Soldier: I raped Iraqi girl, then helped kill her"
Thank god we have freedom fighters.

It is seriously the 2nd week of November? [Nov. 6th, 2006|11:21 pm]
[Current Mood |anxiousanxious]

I am in the library working on my SIP. I will probably be here working on my SIP every free evening and both weekends that are left of this quarter. I'm finally starting to really get into my SIP too, it's too bad that I'll have to rush through it and not do as good a job as I really could.

But, I decided to have a lot of fun this quarter instead, and I hardly ever do that. So go me.

I just got a woooooooooonderful e-mail from Paulina in Chile. I miss her so much.

Tomorrow is election day. Tomorrow is also the day I find out if I am accepted to Teach For America. BIG DAY. I already have a pretty well thought out contingency plan if I do not get it, and I will share it if it becomes relevant.

Let's rock the vote, kids. See ya!

:) [Oct. 13th, 2006|02:18 pm]
I just got an A on an Elman exam!!!

I'm going to Michigan City, IN this weekend!!! I'm going to skinny dip in Lake Michigan in October. And yes, I'm really going to do it because Laurel and I pinky swore to it last night after splitting a pitcher of gin and tonic at Waldo's.

My SIP is still just slighty over a page. BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.

I need to request my absentee ballott ASAP. (For all of you that are away from home, remember to request yours too!!!) That's my public service announcement for the day.

hello world,

Oops, sorry i haven't written for a long time. I just didn't feel like it I guess. I'm doing well. Here's a general update of important factors in my life right now:

Housing: I am now living off campus in Kalamazoo for the first time. I reallllllly like being off campus. I'm cooking good food. Besides the fact that the house has several critical flaws (one bedroom violates the firecode, the dryer is broken, windows are broken, there's a hole in the kitchen floor etc) I'm happy with things.

Transportation: At first I was stoked to have a car on campus, but now I hate it. My car is a peice of SHIIIIIIIIT (said in the voice of the adam sandler song). It's broken down twice and I had to get it towed once. I bet the damn thing isn't even gonna start in the winter. I don't even want a car. I just want to take public transportation for the rest of my life. I'm serious.

SIP (senior thesis): Don't even wanna talk about. Ugh. Barf.

Teach for America and other employment ideas: I have applied to Teach for America. I find out this Friday if I am accepted for a phone interview. I think I would be a good teacher. I'm especially interested in the ESL/Bilingual teaching positions. I'm up for the challange and belive in TFA's cause. I'm also very open to many different I'm very excited/anxious about this whole thing. But knowing the reality that only 12% of applicants are accepted, I'm trying not to put all my eggs in one basket (although it might be too late for that). Anyways, if I don't get TFA I will apply to work with Witness for Peace, BorderLinks, and my high school has a job opening for a Community Service Director that I fit the qualifications for. So, I'm just gonna keep thinking positivly no matter what happens, even though I really wanna do TFA.

Mexico: I'm going to Mexico to visit Dorothy and Claudia in December. SOOOOOO EXCITED.

Ok, this entry is going to get cut short because I'm going to an ISO meeting.
